Great Lent Begins February 23rd
Great Lent — the most solemn and sacred season of the Orthodox Christian year — begins this Monday, February 23rd, with Clean Monday. This holy period of forty days is a time of intensified prayer, fasting, repentance, and almsgiving, as the faithful prepare their hearts and souls to receive the Paschal mystery of Christ's death and Resurrection.
The season takes its name from the Greek Tessarakoste, meaning "the fortieth," echoing the forty days our Lord fasted in the wilderness before beginning His earthly ministry. Throughout Great Lent, the Church prescribes a stricter fast from meat, dairy, fish, oil, and wine on most days, alongside an increase in prostrations, the reading of the Psalter, and attendance at the beautiful Lenten services — among them the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts and the Canon of St. Andrew of Crete.
We invite all the faithful to embrace this season with renewed dedication. Service times will be posted on the calendar. May God grant us all a blessed and fruitful Lenten journey.
